Lesson 1: Introduction to Plumbing Systems

Welcome to TradePath Academy!

Welcome to your first plumbing lesson! In this lesson, you will discover what plumbing does, how the main plumbing systems work, and why understanding them is important for every plumbing student.

1. What Is Plumbing?

Plumbing is the system of pipes, fittings, valves, and fixtures used to distribute water, remove wastewater, and help protect public health.

Examples of plumbing fixtures include toilets, sinks, bathtubs, showers, and kitchen faucets.

2. The Three Main Plumbing Systems

A. Water Supply System

The water supply system delivers water to fixtures and appliances.

Examples:

  • Bathroom faucets

  • Kitchen sinks

  • Showers

  • Water heaters

Remember: The water supply system brings water where it is needed.

B. Drainage System

The drainage system carries wastewater away from fixtures and toward the approved drainage or sewer system.

Examples:

  • Toilet drains

  • Bathroom sink drains

  • Shower drains

  • Kitchen sink drains

Remember: The drainage system carries wastewater away.

C. Venting System

The plumbing venting system allows air to enter the drainage system and helps maintain proper pressure so traps can protect the building from sewer gases.

Remember: Drainage carries wastewater; venting helps the drainage system work properly.

3. What Is a Plumbing Fixture?

A plumbing fixture is a device connected to a plumbing system that supplies water or receives wastewater.

Common examples include:

  • Toilet

  • Lavatory (bathroom sink)

  • Kitchen sink

  • Bathtub

  • Shower

4. Why Are Traps Important?

A plumbing trap is designed to hold a small amount of water that forms a seal against sewer gases entering a building.

A common example is the P-trap beneath a bathroom sink.

Important: Traps must be properly installed and protected according to applicable plumbing codes.

5. What You Should Remember

  • Water supply delivers water.

  • Drainage removes wastewater.

  • Venting helps maintain proper air pressure in the drainage system.

  • Fixtures are the devices people use.

  • Traps help prevent sewer gases from entering occupied spaces.

Lesson Review

Before moving to the next lesson, make sure you can explain the difference between water supply, drainage, and venting in your own words.

In the next lesson, we will explore common plumbing tools and learn what each tool is used for.
